Resumen Este artículo presenta una visión general de la red eléctrica inteligente (Smart Grid) con sus características y funcionalidades y se identifica las actividades de investigación, tendencias, problemas y desafíos de la Smart Grid, Para ello se realizó una revisión de la literatura donde se visualiza como la integración de los recursos energéticos distribuidos (generación distribuida y almacenamiento energético), así como los avances de las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones, han desarrollado el concepto de la moderna red eléctrica. En esta área, la implementación de políticas y la rápida integración de sistemas de gestión, están teniendo como resultado una gran revolución en la generación, la trasmisión, la distribución, la operación y el consumo energético.

Abstract This paper presents an overview of the smart grid with its features and functionalities and identifies the research activities, developments, problems and challenges of smart grids. To achieve this objective, a literature review was done, finding how the dynamic integration of developments in electrical engineering, energy storage and advances in information and communication technologies has shaped the concept of the modern electricity network. In this area, policy implementation and the rapid integration of management systems are causing a great revolution in the generation, transmission, distribution, operation and energy consumption.
