Coercion and punishment in long-term perspectives

One facet of this concentration on the individual is that the offender should not receive greater punishment than he deserves. Punishment for some other reason-such as to further society in some way-loses sight of the individual. The other facet of the focus on the individual is emphasizing the fact that the individual is a human being. There are some punishments that are so inhumane, so uncivilized, that no one should be punished in that manner-not even humans who have committed the vilest of offenses
