Halal slaughter of sheep in Belgium: Impact of EU and Belgian legislation on religious practices and animal welfare

Religious slaughter (“RS”) without stunning is controversial. The principles of religious freedom and animal protection are in conflict. This report uses the halal slaughter of sheep in Belgium as a case study to discussrecent attempts to balance these principles and highlights animal welfare concerns in non-stun RS. It concludes by proposing ways to improve animal welfare during RS.
