          Abstract

This paper highlights the paramount role of parliamentary questioning as a control mechanism exercised by the Federal National Council (FNC) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The surge in its utilization, attributed to heightened awareness among FNC members and ministers, has significantly enhanced the Council's control capabilities, especially in the absence of alternative parliamentary control instruments such as interpellations. The paper underscores the simplicity and adaptability of parliamentary questioning, which spans diverse topics and addresses everyday state matters, rectifies errors, monitors law implementation, and fills legislative gaps. The structure of the paper comprises two sections: the first scrutinizes procedural requirements within the UAE's Constitution and the FNC's Bylaw, while the second section explores practical examples, offering insights into the distinctive nature of the FNC's parliamentary questioning compared to regional practices.

Natural resource dependency, institutional quality and human capital development in Gulf Countries

This study analyses the social aspects of the natural resource dependency and institutional quality in the Gulf Countries by taking human capital as the dependent variable. The cointegration and error correction model has been applied based on the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach by using the time-series data from 1984 to 2014. The study uses the natural resource rents as a percentage of GDP as a proxy of natural resource dependency and corruption as a proxy of institutional quality. The results of the co-integration show that the natural resource dependency dampens human capital in Kuwait, UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and that corruption shows a significant negative impact on human capital in Kuwait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the long-term.

The psychological distress and COVID-19 pandemic during lockdown: A cross-sectional study from United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Background The pandemic resulted in the societal changes as conflicts and instability were the common concerns experienced by families because of the lockdown. However, the psychological impact of the COVID-19 on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population is not studied extensively. Objective The study evaluates the psychological impact of lockdown during the pandemic on the people in the UAE. Material and methods This study was cross-sectional in nature and was conducted using a questionnaire consisting of 35-items. The questions were related to social, psychological, and personal aspects. Multivariate Linear regression was used to find the outcomes between independent variables. Results The mean value of social phobia was 2.56 ± .620, followed by the mean score of anxiety (2.47 ± .666), stress (2.44 ± .631), and depression (2.42 ± .682). The higher the respondents experienced the scores, the more depression, anxiety, and stress. Demographics such as marital status, age, and occupation and education level have a statistically significant association with social phobia, anxiety, depression, and stress. Conclusion The study concludes that the lockdown more psychologically impacted males, older people, and unemployed individuals during the pandemic.
