Analisar a reinvenção dos novos espaços urbanos e a impressão de novos sentidos através da população de Ribeirão Preto durante a Primeira República, mostrando as contradições e as ambigüidades da modernização ribeirão-pretana durante o auge da produção cafeeira e as formas de sociabilidade e de participação da população local.

This article analyzes the recreation of the new spaces and new urban significations in the view of common citizens at Ribeirão Preto during the First Republic, pointing out the contradictions and ambiguities of the modernization process in that city during the best moment of the coffee planting production, also considering the forms of sociability and participation of the local population.
