Abstract

Resumo Este artigo analisa a transformação do pau-brasil de monopólio real a monopólio nacional durante a construção do estado nacional no Brasil. Nos atentamos à análise do comércio do gênero a partir da província de Pernambuco e das regiões circunvizinhas para os portos europeus, dimensionando o papel assumido pelo ramo durante a independência. A partir dos ofícios e dos requerimentos da Junta da Fazenda de Pernambuco, analisamos a transformação do estanco em um monopólio nacional, aprofundando as discussões sobre o papel desempenhado pelo pau-brasil no comércio internacional e nas negociações que envolveram o reconhecimento da independência brasileira. A principal hipótese defendida é a de que o pau-brasil atuou como salvaguarda do império nas relações comerciais e diplomáticas com as nações estrangeiras em um período marcado por indefinições políticas.

Abstract This article analyzes the transformation of brazilwood from a royal monopoly to a national monopoly during the construction of the national state in Brazil. We focus on the analysis of the trade in the genre from the province of Pernambuco and the surrounding regions to European ports, measuring the role assumed by the industry during independence. Based on the official documents and requests of the Pernambuco Finance Board, we analyze the transformation of tin into a national monopoly, deepening discussions about the role played by brazilwood in international trade and in the negotiations surrounding the recognition of Brazilian independence. The main hypothesis is that brazilwood, acted as a safeguard for the empire in commercial and diplomatic relations with foreign nations in a period marked by political uncertainty.
