          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract This article analyzes the medieval reception of the episode in the life of Alexander the Great known as the enclosure of the unclean peoples of Gog and Magog. In particular, it analyzes the transmission of this episode from the eschatological literature to historiographical discourse represented by chronicles of the 12th century. The authors highlighted within this work, who until now have not been considered in this process, are from France and the Germanic Empire: Lambert of Saint-Omer, Honorius Augustodunensis, Otto of Freising, Richard of Cluny, and the anonymous author of the Libellus de recordatione temporum. The examination of these links demonstrates the critical role played by the encyclopaedic literature in the transmission of this episode and suggests that its adoption by the chronicles was due more to this type of scholarly literature than to the influence of Alexander's biographies.
