Dhaxalreeb is an academic journal that undergoes peer review prior to publication. It is published by SCAS and follows a Diamond Open Access policy. To submit an article, send it via email to dhaxalreeb AT redsea-online DOT org.
The editorial team of the Dhaxalreeb are pleased to invite submissions for Volume 21, Number 2 of Dhaxalreeb, a guest-edited and themed issue of the journal. Dhaxalreeb is an academic, peer-reviewed journal of history, culture, and politics housed and sponsored by the Somaliland Centre for African Studies.
This year’s special edition theme is “Borders Unbound: Power, Identity, and the Making of Boundaries.” We welcome interdisciplinary proposals broadly related to the concept of borders, including (but not limited to) questions of statehood, nationalism, identity, international law and governance, private land ownership, and culture and symbolic boundaries. Dhaxalreeb is dedicated to supporting research that engages indigenous knowledge, methodologies, and memory. While any particular geographic focus is not required, we prefer proposals that clearly demonstrate theoretical or concrete implications for the Horn of Africa.
Proposals and subsequent manuscripts must be written in English and fewer than 5000 words (not including citations). Manuscripts must contain original data analysis and nuanced theoretical engagement. Additionally, manuscripts cannot contain any previously published materials and cannot be currently in consideration for publication in another journal. Please see the supplemental document for more information on the peer-review publication process. And address any questions to Clare Bath at cbath@nd.edu.
The deadline for consideration is 5 pm EAT (10am EST) on March 20th, 2025, though early submissions are encouraged. Authors whose proposals are selected must be prepared to submit their manuscript in mid-June. To be considered, please include (1) an abstract (300 words or less) and (2) a resume, CV, or brief academic/professional bio (one page or less).
Supplemental document regarding Dhaxalreeb’s peer-review and publication process:
Following official notification of proposal acceptance from the editor (tentatively planned for February 2025 for the next issue), author(s) must submit their manuscripts in approximately 2 months. Information regarding manuscript formatting and submission will be shared with proposal acceptance.
Once a manuscript is submitted, the editor will distribute the manuscript to a minimum of two peer reviewers who have experience studying your subject matter or using the chosen method(s). Reviewers will remain anonymous. The reviewers will write a short report on the manuscript, ultimately suggesting whether the manuscript should be accepted, rejected, or revised and resubmitted.
The editor will write a brief summary of reviewers’ comments in order to standardize the review process and clarify reviewer comments. If a revision is requested, author(s) shall promptly address the reviewers’ comments and resubmit the manuscript for a second round of review. Once accepted for publication, a copy editor will be in touch with the author(s) to make small edits for grammar and clarity; revisions to the content of the paper will no longer be allowed at this stage.
The review process will take up to four months, though most manuscripts will be returned to the author(s) with a preliminary decision within two months of submission. Author(s) will be notified when the special edition is officially published and will be provided with a PDF or paper copy of their article.
