Amsterdam University Press (AUP) is a leading publisher of academic books, journals and textbooks in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The key aim of AUP is to make current research available to scholars, students, innovators, and the general public. AUP stands for scholarly excellence, global presence, and engagement with the international academic community. Established in 1992, AUP achieves this with a paper and e-format publishing programme of high-quality, peer-reviewed academic books in English. AUP runs an additional publishing programme of textbooks for universities and higher education, journals and major reference works.
AUP has run a successful print and digital programme of peer-reviewed academic publications for almost thirty years. AUP specialises in the subjects Asian Studies, Film, Media and Communication, History, Language and Literature, and Social and Political Sciences. In 2019, AUP published over 120 academic monographs and edited collections. This commissioning scope puts AUP in standing with other major scholarly publishers of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The prolific output of the Academic Programme is the result of a company-wide commitment to spread knowledge swiftly and effectively in the academic market. From Finance to the Customer Service and Orders Departments, from Desk Editing and Production to Sales and Marketing, and from the Editors to Publishers, each experienced professional provides authors, readers, partners, and customers a dedicated and individual service. AUP is proud to be a part of an international academic community of scholars and readers. With highly qualified Commissioning Editors based in both Europe and the U.S., committed Series Editors in institutions across the world, and an international marketing strategy, AUP’s reach is truly global.
AUP focuses on the distribution of knowledge on timely issues that are of interest to students in higher education. AUP is strong in publishing both Dutch- and English-language textbooks for institutes that teach students from a variety of backgrounds or students who are in the process of switching to an English-language course. Authors of these books for the educational market combine academic depth with an accessible writing style, even when addressing complex subjects.
AUP publishes several Dutch- and English-language Journals within the Humanities and Social Sciences. AUP’s journals cover a variety of subjects from (Dutch) History, Literature and Linguistics, to Pedagogy, Theology, Media Studies and Gender Studies. AUP's journals are hosted on the Ingenta Connect and Aphra platforms.
AUP makes its publishing expertise available to third parties, by advising on publication policy, editing texts, and arranging printing and typesetting for academic institutions and individual academics. For example, AUP works closely with partners such as the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Eye Filmmuseum, the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), and the University of Amsterdam.
AUP is a longstanding supporter of Open Access publishing and releases many academic books in Open Access directly on publication. To this end, it works closely with platforms such as JSTOR, the OAPEN Library, and the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). In 2020, AUP joined the Open Research Library (ORL), part of the Knowledge Unlatched (KU) global initiative for Open Access publishing. AUP is supportive of Green Open Access initiatives and is partnered with Figshare for authors to quickly and efficiently make their manuscripts and supplementary data publicly available.
