About us

The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools. Our members have a unique depth and breadth of knowledge about the discipline, and the Society's role is to help unlock and harness the potential of that knowledge. We do this by bringing together and empowering communities that shape the future of microbiology. We generate public benefit by fostering communication bo0th among communities of microbiologists and between microbiologists and other communities who can translate that knowledge in useful ways.

The Microbiology Society publishes six peer reviewed journals offering original research papers, essential review articles and commentary on topical issues. Microbiology, Journal of General Virology, Journal of Medical Microbiology and the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology are subscription journals which offer a gold open access option, while Microbial Genomics and the new Access Microbiology are fully open access journals operating under a gold model. As a not-for-profit publisher we put the community at the heart of our work: our editors and editorial boards are leading experts in the field, and we make everything free to read no more than a year after publication.

About the journals

Microbiology is the Society's flagshhip journal, publishing high-quality international research since 1947.

Journal of General Virology includes ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profiles, a unique reference resource from leading viral experts on the classification, structure and properties of viruses.

Journal of Medical Microbiology is the go-to interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic.

International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology is the official journal of record for the International Committee on the Systematics of Prokaryotes and the BAM division of the IUMS.

Microbial Genomics is the Open Access journal of choice for pioneering research in genomics.

Access Microbiology is a new journal publishing replication studies, negative results, research proposals, data management plans and other high-value but hidden research outputs.

A Sustainable Future

To highlight the vital role our members play in delivering on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, nine learned societies and membership charities collaborated to create a collection of must-read articles. This unique collaboration aims to cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries, as it is only by working together that we can achieve a sustainable future.

Microbe and Virus Profiles

Bringing together essential reviews from Microbiology and Journal of General Virology

Microbe Profiles are concise, review-type articles that provide overviews of the classification, structure and properties of novel microbes, written by leading microbiologists, while ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profiles are written by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) study groups, comprised of leading experts in the field. The profiles summarise the individual chapters from the ICTV’s online 10th Report on Virus Taxonomy, and provide the latest taxonomic information on viruses. (publ. by the Microbiology Society)

Microbiome

In celebration of World Microbiome Day on 27th of June, the Microbiology Society and the British Society for Immunology have collaborated to curate a freely-available collection of Microbiome research articles published in our journals. This unique collaboration breaks traditional disciplinary boundaries, bringing the microbiology and immunology communities together with shared interests.

X-AMR (cross-disciplinary antimicrobial resistance)

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a cross-disciplinary issue, with ground-breaking studies currently bringing together clinicians and modellers, veterinary and soil scientists, microbiologists and anthropologists. Yet finding a home for the unique publications from this research is difficult. The Microbiology Society is providing such a home with X-AMR, a cross-journal, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and we invite submissions in the form of research papers, mini reviews or commentaries.
