Annual Reviews has curated a new review article collection to explore the causes, impacts, and prediction of climate change and related weather events. In this interdisciplinary collection, our experts discuss the risk factors that influence extreme environmental and ecological change.

This collection includes 22 review articles on the politics and policy of climate change, the impact climate change is currently having on global populations, and the impact on aquatic ecosystems, from mangrove forests to permafrost and ice. While transformative changes are needed to safeguard our future, we can also learn from past scholarship on this topic. Four decades ago, Influences of Mankind on Climate by pioneering meteorological and atmospheric scientist William Kellogg (1917-2007) was published in the Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

This special article collection spans 15 years of research and brings together expert perspectives on data science advances and challenges in biomedical informatics. Diverse subjects are addressed including genomics, psychology, public health, biophysics, privacy, pharmacology, ecology, and biomedical engineering.

Readers will discover reviews on the relationship between democracy and racial, economic, and gender inequality, the effect of laws and processes on voter turnout, and the behaviors behind voting choices.

Annual Reviews has made a special collection of articles available to recognize DNA Day, April 23, 2019. Founded by the US NIH National Human Genome Research Institute, the awareness day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 as well as the initial discovery of DNA’s double helix in 1953. Genomics has changed what is possible in health care and food security.

Annual Reviews DNA Day 2019 curated article collection includes 18 reviews of research from pioneers and leaders on ethics, public benefits, and concerns of genomics. Interdisciplinary research on basic science and the potential of genomic projects is also highlighted.  Barry S. Coller's review on Ethics of Human Genome Editing, January 2019, has rapidly gained a readership.

Over 23,900 natural species are currently threatened with extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, including 41% of amphibians, 25% of mammals, and 13% of birds. This article collection, written by invited experts, looks at ecology and extinction risk-from the ancient DNA biomarkers that indicate environmental activity during historical extinctions, to modern day research in biodiversity loss. These Annual Reviews articles were freely available through December 2017 and are always available to subscribers. 

This interdisciplinary collection spans decades and illustrates our increased understanding and successes in preventing and treating the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Through this lens, remaining challenges are identified and further reinforced by the current COVID-19 pandemic, including health inequity, vaccine development, and the lasting impacts on global society and culture.

The Mental Health Awareness 2019 special article collection includes 20 review articles which are freely available through November 30, 2019–and always available at subscribing institutions.

Knowing about risk factors and also what contributes to a healthy heart can help to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). Coronary heart disease-related deaths declined by more than 20% between 1990-2000, but it remains the world’s leading cause of death. Researchers believe increased awareness and access to evidence-based treatment and affordable drugs can lead to a greater reduction in cardiovascular disease.
