Abstract
In this Afterword, McLelland reflects on themes emerging from the studies in this
volume on the history of teaching grammar to language learners, including changing
definitions, methods, and, importantly, ideologies.
Nicola McLelland is Professor of German and History of Linguistics at the University
of Nottingham. She has published widely on the history of language learning and teaching.
Her publications include German Through English Eyes (Harrassowitz, 2015, now open
access), and Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages. A History of Language Education,
Assessment and Policy in Britain (Routledge, 2017). She has co-edited, with Richard
Smith, The History of Language Learning and Teaching (3 volumes, Legenda, 2018), as
